Transition at

Special School

Our aim is for students to successfully move into vocational, leisure and preferred living environments.

Senior students preparing for adult life are supported by transition programmes.  These include:

Work Experience: A job coach supports students in a range of placements in the local community.

Hard Technology: Developing confidence and competence with design, workshop tools and incorporating students interests.

Food Technology: An essential life skill, which includes learning about safety and  healthy eating.

Horticulture: Students plan, plant and maintain a kitchen garden with produce used in the teaching kitchens.

SPEC (South Pacific Educational Courses): Accredited programmes on NZQA framework for students to gain recognised qualifications.

Sports: Special Olympics, swimming at the Aquatic centre, Hatea walking loop, Kensington Park

and Kensington Stadium.

Post School Connections: Regular contact with Lynkz, IDEA services, Geneva/ Elevator for our past students to keep in contact with the school. These are all within walking distance from school.

Advice and Guidance: For students and families navigating a future beyond school. Planning for school leavers in their last years at school to ensure a smooth transition to adult life. A multi agency approach using a MInistry of Social Development funded co-ordinator, the school and family to create a positive and meaningful plan for life after school.
